HBO originally wanted to have a different title design for their different take on a western genre series. The initial styleboards designed meant to capture the harsh unforgiving feel of those times and the strong feeling of despair that was depicted in the series. It was about the people, their struggle and how this shaped their daily lives. Intentionally almost everything in the design that was somewhat remotely "western-like" was avoided.
